John Singer Sargent: His Life and Works in 500 Images: An Illustrated Exploration of the Artist, His Life and Context, with a Gallery of 300 Paintings and Drawings

Hands down, best book getting to know Sargent on a budget. Lots of nice illustrations, colorful and many rare. Author did good job writing the important points and details to his life. I luve the chronological order his life is put throughout. This is all done on nice quality stock paper. I have a few books on Sargent this is the one I come back to for reference.Only tidbit I didn't give 5 stars was some paintings colour reproduction is off. Gives a garish look of what they might appear like. But only about a few. I have the Pre-Ralphelite book by same publisher. Its terrible in comparison to Sargents. The whole book is practically reddish-orange in picture reproduction.

The photos in this book are very poor quality. Buy it only as a basic reference tool. Don't buy it to study any of the paintings. It looks like they took photos of photos, not photos of the original paintings.

Author presents some interesting insights on Sargent, and it is an easy read. But the reproductions are very poor, with mostly a brownish tone pervading. But for the price, it does have a lot of his work (be warned that most are small reproductions) and shows his versatility in both subject matter and mediums.

Very well done, his life story and lots of photos, black and white and lots of color. It's a favorite of mine.

A must for your art studio library if you want to learn about painting especially John Singer Sargent.

Got it for my artist life and it is sooooo inspiring to read and learn about one of the greatest artist of all time

Excellent range of his works reviewed and commented on in detail encapsulating his various techniques in water colour and oils.I would recommend it for anyone studying or researching his works or for those just curious and interested in his works.Purchased to assist in a course I am doing that is conducting in depth researches of particular elements of his water colour techniques.

This is a superb volume combining details of Sargent's life and work with an extensive gallery of his works. The reproductions are excelient. Tremendous value.
