All I've done to maintain it is add a little oil a couple of times a year to keep it turning easy. Wipe it down after you use it (especially if can contents slosh out), and it will stay in great shape for years.]Well, if you're reading this review after browsing to the Edlund #1 Commercial Can Opener (with base), then I'll assume you fall into one of three categories: you're involved in food service somewhere (e.g., restaurant, soup kitchen), you have a large family that uses a lot of institutional sized (10#) cans, or you are wondering if something like this might work for someone with arthritis. I find myself in the latter two categories.This opener brought to an end our practice of buying and wearing out traditional, hand-held can openers. We're a big family and open a lot of institutional sized cans. I have no complaints. This opener can handle them all--even little tuna cans. Since we're not a restaurant, our biggest issue was deciding where to mount the base plate. We opted for a corner of one of our countertops in the area with the least foot traffic. Mounting the base plate required drilling holes through the countertop, then installing machine screws and nuts (provided). If we want the extra counter space (e.g., when hosting), the opener can be removed from the bracked and stored in a drawer or cabinet.Turning the crank sure beats trying to turn those little handles on the hand-held openers we've used all these years. My wife has recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her fingers (sadly so, because she is so young), so this is a real hand-saver for her.

The surface of the casting is extremely rough, they claim the metal is "Stainless Iron." Iron is an element, "stainless steel" is an alloy containing iron and a few other elements creating an alloy which is resistant to oxidizing. I don't know if this is plated iron or an actual alloy but I do know that the casting is very rough. The tolerances are large so the can opener wobbles around. This is a cheap knockoff of the Edlund "Old Reliable #1" model 11100 can opener which is made in the USA and is much higher quality. You get what you pay for.The Edlund is worth the difference for 2 reasons, one, it is much higher quality and two, it is made in America. Replacement parts are available for the Edlund at Restaurant Supply businesses all across the country which is another nice feature of the "Old Reliable." Bite the bullet, pay the difference and be happier.

I accidentally bought 2 of these can openers instead of 1. But I destroyed the box opening, so I went ahead and installed them both in my kitchen. Both have worked fine since I bought them in March. No problems whatsoever. I'm in a commercial setting so they do go through abuse and we clean them regularly, I feel I got very good value for my money

The commercial can opener was extremely poor quality and would not work. We immediately reinstalled to 15 year old commercial can opener that this new one was purchased to replaced and it worked much better than the brand new one. When a refund was requested we were asked to provide evidence that the product did not work and no refund was issued. Poor customer service and horrific product!

I bought this for my sister! She caters and she loves it!

This can opener is a life saver, I read the reviews they were mixed, but after working with trying to open each can size properly I learned how with ease! The number 10 can was the most difficult but if you pop the opener down on the can and hold the handle with your other hand it turns with ease. It just takes a little trial and error. But overall a great purchase.

The gears are not accurate to the can and often hard to open have to adjust several times on one can . Shards of metal created when opening the can.
