A Modern Classic from James Herriot
Oscar, Cat About Town is a delightful tale with fabulous illustrations. These books do not appeal only to preschoolers...teenagers and adults enjoy a leisurely read through them because the story is interesting and the colorful, realistic paintings are a feast for the eyes. Every child should have a few of these modern classics by James Herriot. We've given away copies to friends and a local Little Library. I encourage you to buy some and brighten up the lives of others you know.

Lovely story, beautifully illustrated
Famed author James Herriot wrote this book for children to enjoy, at their own level. It tells a story about a cat that likes people and likes to go where people are, to hang with them and see what they are doing. Harriot meets the cat when a girl brings a starving, bedraggled cat to his veterinary. She found the cat and saw that the poor thing needed help. I suspect that this story comes straight from the experience of the veterinarian. The blurb suggests that kids older than seven are the best audience for this book. But I think that even the youngest children will like to have the story read to them. Older children can read it for themselves. Ruth Brown has prepared a series of illustrations that I think of as high art. One painting near the beginning of the book perfectly captures the expressive eyes of a kitty cat in distress. Brilliant painting.I did, reluctantly, take off one star from a five-star effort. The publishers did not put in page numbers. I maintain that every children's book should have page numbers to acquaint the child with numbers as well as the letters and sentences. Still, this book is among the very best of picture books for children. Highly recommended.
